Let's face it. Each of us has our weakness which draws us and calls out to us, and we therefore must purchase. It may be small collectibles or handbags or earrings. I have to say I love shoes, (you can never have too many), small tables (that will fit in anywhere) and decorative boxes. I am a sucker for a beautiful box.
Boxes do double duty as they add beauty and style to a room and are practical at the same time. Who can't use a little more space to store the small items constantly needed? Boxes come in all shapes and sizes and are made from a wide variety of materials from wood, ceramic, glass, with accents of penshell, brass, bone, stone and actually, whatever the designer decides to add. Here are a sampling of boxes using different materials.
Black lacquer and broken pieces of eggshell are used to create the zebra pattern in this box.
Completely different from the zebra box is this one with penshell and mother-of-pearl inlaid in a fretwork pattern. Cast brass mounts with amazing detail complete the piece.
Here is a favorite of mine - a wooden box hand painted in red and black with gold gilding which adds a pop of color to the room.
Mirror gives this box a completely different look with a handpainted bamboo motif - perfect for a dressing table.
Whimsical describes this box covered in inlaid penshell and sitting on a cast brass crocodile with a dragonfly perching on top.
This pair is made of marble with a penshell inlaid lizard and crab keeping watch.
These are a few examples of the thousands of varieties of decorative boxes available. Next time you visit your local fine home furnishings store, be sure to look for the perfect box to add to your home or as a gift for someone special. After all, a place can always be found for a beautiful box!
